WHAT TO SEE IN ITALY: Pizzo (also known as Pizzo Calabro) is an Italian town of 9 059 inhabitants in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria. The village is renowned for the production of the Pizzo truffle.
Pizzo is a coastal village, perched on a promontory in the middle of the Gulf of St. Euphemia. Its territory includes an indented coastline, characterised by sandy beaches in some places and rocks in others. On the north-east coast, from the Mediterranean pine forest to the rock, there are almost 9 km of wide sandy beaches. At the end of the Marinella district, the mountain of Vibo rises up, forming a curtain around the territory, which has its border with Maierato and Vibo Valentia high up on the ridge of the hills. Further south, where the tuffaceous rock on which Pizzo was born and developed rises, the coast becomes rocky with numerous coves and areas rich in natural rocks, as well as several caves, including the Grotta Azzurra, reopened in recent years after various interventions to protect it from wave motion.
In the central area, there is the Seggiola beach, a small fjord in the centre of the tufa rock on which the town is perched, dominated by the Aragonese Castle built in the second half of the 15th century by Ferdinand I of Aragon, and the Marina, a pretty seaside resort and night-time meeting place.
Pizzo Calabro, located along the famous Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) in the province of Vibo Valentia, is an enchanting village that boasts a multifaceted beauty and a bright, intimate atmosphere. This definitive guide will take you on a discovery of the 10 wonders this place has to offer.

Exploring the Castle of Pizzo is like travelling back in time, into the life of a valiant hero who did not give in to defeat. Joachim Murat, King of Naples, sought victory but instead found death in Pizzo. His emotional story is depicted inside the manor house, where the last moments of his life have been reconstructed with attention to detail.
Visit the cell where Joachim spent his last moments and wrote his farewell letter to his wife Carolina and his four children. Discover the scene of the King's confession with Canon Masdea. Immerse yourself in history and feel the adrenaline rush through your veins as you explore the cells, the semi-dungeons and the summary trial against the King.
The Castle of Pizzo, also known as Castello Murat, is located in Pizzo, a town in Calabria in the province of Vibo Valentia. It houses a museum that tells the story of Joachim's last days, from his imprisonment to his execution. There is also a fragment of a sculpture by Antonio Canova, which was lost during the passage of Giuseppe Garibaldi.
The castle's current construction is a mix of history and adventure. Once a watchtower, then fortified by King Ferdinand I of Naples to resist attacks by Saracen pirates, the castle is surrounded by a deep moat and solid walls. Access to the castle via a limestone bridge that replaces the old drawbridge.
Explore the history of Pizzo Castle and discover the life of Joachim Murat, a hero who never gave in to defeat. Take part in the adventure and experience history!
The Garibaldi Fountain is a historical treasure located in the heart of Pizzo! This wonderful fountain dating back to the 15th century is a true icon of the town and an oasis for thirsty visitors. Also known as Fontanavecchia before 1866, this fountain has been restored and embellished with an imposing grey granite façade, making it an unmissable tourist attraction.
The Garibaldi Fountain consists of four cherubs spraying fresh, healthy water from their elevated position. The water gushing from the fountain has a rusty colour due to the presence of iron, but it is drinkable and has healing properties. Locals claim that this water is able to cure certain diseases!
In 1866, the Garibaldini of the Orsini Brigade discovered the freshness of the iron waters of the Garibaldi Fountain and found refreshment among a welcoming population that surrounded them with affection to the cry of "Viva l'Italia!" This place is truly a piece of Italian history, a place of memory and reflection.
Pizzo Calabro is a town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea that is home to a unique place: the Vicolo dei Baci (Kissing Alley). This steep flight of steps on Corso San Francesco, located in the historic centre, is an oasis of romance that impresses visitors with its images of famous kisses from cinema, literature and songs.
The creator of the Vicolo dei Baci is Mimmo Pacifico, a researcher and president of the cultural association 'Carta canta', who decided to enhance Pizzo with an installation celebrating love. The alley, which recalls murals in other towns in Calabria and the Vibonese area, is the ideal place to immortalise a kiss, as Pacifico did with his current wife in 1968.
The Vicolo dei Baci is a fun and romantic opportunity to spend a relaxing day in Pizzo Calabro, one of Calabria's most charming and enchanting towns. And with the rush of tourists and residents looking to strike a kiss, this installation has already become a must-visit attraction.
The Garibaldi Fountain is easily accessible on foot, located 200 metres from Piazza della Repubblica, 300 metres from Murat Castle and about 1.6 km from Pizzo train station.
