A holiday to live in colour
The best places to visit in Tropea, Calabria: the complete guide
Tucked between the Gulfs of Gioia and S.Eufemia, Tropea is a city that enchants with its millenary history, natural and architectural beauty. According to legend, Tropea was founded by Hercules on his return from Spain and, in Roman times, played an important role along the coast.
This unique and fascinating city is the perfect destination for those seeking a holiday that combines the pleasure of the sea with a cultural and scenic itinerary of great interest. The ancient heart of Tropea stands on a terrace overlooking the sea and at its centre is the Benedictine sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, offering spectacular views of the coastline and surrounding islands.
The sanctuary, which dates back to 370 A.D., can be reached via a flight of steps carved into the rock and is surrounded by a lush garden with Mediterranean plants. The sea view from the islet is truly unique, with the Aeolian Islands, Mount Etna, Sicily and the Tyrrhenian Sea as a backdrop.
This is just one of the many wonders Tropea has to offer. Discover the complete guide to the best places to visit in Tropea and get ready to immerse yourself in an unforgettable experience.
WHAT TO SEE....
SANCTUARY OF SANTA MARIA DELL'ISOLA
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola in Tropea stands on a rock and was probably inhabited by hermits in the 7th-8th centuries. In the 11th century, it passed to the Basilian monks and then to the Benedictines. Robert Guiscard imposed the Latin rite around 1060. After the earthquakes of 1783 and 1905, little remained of the original structure. The staircase leading to the sanctuary was built around 1810. This medieval church has become an iconic place in Calabria worldwide.
THE HISTORIC CENTRE
The city is full of several very suggestive viewpoints Many are the belvedere points in the city, four of which are particularly noteworthy: Largo villetta; Largo Migliarese, with its famous view of Santa Maria dell'Isola; Largo Galluppi, which overlooks the marina; and Largo Duomo, which offers a splendid view of the hinterland around Tropea.
ARTISTIC CREATIONS "IL FARO"
For decades in Tropea they have been making nativity scenes and artistic figurines, including animated ones, reaching high levels of perfection in the art of the nativity scene.
The statuettes are the memories and the fruit of the nostalgia of artist Benito Badolato, who through his creations brings to life the characters of his childhood, recalls old customs and recreates the almost disappeared ancient trades of Calabria.
.
CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MARY OF ROMANIA
The Co-Cathedral of Mary Most Holy of Romania is an ancient religious building dating back to the 12th century and was built by the Normans. In the 17th century, it was transformed in the Baroque style and extended by 12 metres. It has suffered damage from earthquakes and has undergone several restorations. The church has a long, three-nave structure in the Norman style, built with yellow tuff ashlars and lava stone. It houses the icon of the Virgin of Romania, patron saint of the town. The Black Crucifix, probably from France and dating from no earlier than 1600, is a particularly interesting feature. In addition, the Tamburini pipe organ opus 189, built in 1938, is located in the right aisle.
Beaches of Tropea
The beaches of Tropea are an enchanting place in Calabria, where the blue of the sea blends with the natural beauty of the coastline. The soft white sand, crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery make these beaches an ideal destination for a summer holiday of relaxation and nature. It is no coincidence that Tropea is known as the 'Pearl of the Ionian Sea' and its beaches are among the most popular in Italy. Known for their beauty and for the presence of numerous well-equipped bathing establishments, Tropea's beaches are the ideal place to spend a day in the open air, practising water sports and enjoying the sun. Whether you are looking for a day of peace and quiet or a fun-filled adventure, Tropea's beaches are the right choice for you!
Beaches of the coast of the gods
The Costa degli Dei beaches in Tropea are a real jewel set along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Calabria. Surrounded by lush vegetation and bathed by a crystal-clear turquoise sea, these beaches are an oasis of peace and beauty for tourists seeking an escape from daily routine. With soft, white sand and clean, warm waters, Tropea's beaches are the ideal destination for a relaxing and adventurous beach holiday. Discover this piece of paradise and immerse yourself in the unspoilt nature and ancient culture of the region.
